Increase Funding and Access to Public Transportation for Underserved Communities
Los Angeles and California leaders must expand and increase investment in public transportation that provides equitable access for low-income individuals and communities of color.
Why is this important?
Having access to reliable transportation is a basic necessity in everyday life. Yet across California, many individuals and families—particularly those from low-income and racially marginalized communities—continue to experience transportation insecurity. According to the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, nearly 1 in 5 adults in the United States reported experiencing transportation insecurity within the past month, a condition that makes it difficult to reach destinations critical for daily life, such as work, grocery stores, medical care, and social services.
This burden disproportionately affects Black, Latino, and other communities of color. In California, historic patterns of racial segregation and housing discrimination have left many communities underserved, with limited access to reliable and affordable public transportation systems. In addition, research further shows that individuals facing transportation insecurity are 6% more likely to report poor health and 11% more likely to experience depressive symptoms. Transportation insecurity is also closely linked to food insecurity and unmet medical needs—conditions that already disproportionately affect many communities of color across California.
Los Angeles and California leaders must expand and increase investment in public transportation that provides equitable access for low-income individuals and communities of color.
Expanding public transportation would provide significant benefits for low-income individuals and families. It would allow households to save money, increase access to employment opportunities, and improve access to healthcare and other essential services. Improved public transit systems will also boost the economy and support underserved communities.
This petition is directed toward the Mayor of Los Angeles (Karen Bass), the Los Angeles City Council, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Together, we can advocate for expanded and equitable public transit access. Increased investment in public transportation will help create a more connected, inclusive, and equitable future for communities across California.
